    England

So, we were just having a look through some photos from England's group games and is it just me, or is there a common theme in all of these pictures?

When you listen to athletes and coaches in any sport, one of the words they like to use is 'consistency'. Well, maybe that applies to everything for England manager Gareth Southgate, who by the look of things, loves a particular white shirt!

    So, I've got to ask:

    • Has the England boss travelled light?
    • Is this a superstition he simply cannot or will not break?

Either way, it's hard to top the famous waistcoat era isn't it?

England are also third favourites to reach the final, after Spain (27%) and the Netherlands (25%). England's chance is 22% according to Gracenote's forecast.

We have also calculated the chance of all the possible finals happening. Spain v England (5.7%) and England v Germany (5.0%) are both in the top five most likely Euro 2024 finals.

The favourite is a repeat of the 2010 World Cup final between Netherlands and Spain but this only has a 7% chance of coming to fruition.

England are the fifth favourites to win Euro 2024, behind Spain, Germany, Netherlands and France. Gracenote's forecast gives England around a 10% chance of winning the competition.

Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold has been on the couch for today's edition of the Lions' Den.

Alexander-Arnold started England's opening two games of Euro 2024 in midfield but lost his place in the starting XI for the goalless draw against Slovakia.

"I think for us as players it will be silly of us, coming out here without the thought of winning a trophy in our head," Alexander-Arnold said.

"That's something you have to have and use as motivation.

"If you look throughout the whole team there are a load of winners, all at different levels, ages and experiences and we have to draw on that."

England are also third favourites to reach the Euro 2024 semi-finals, again behind Spain and the Netherlands. Gracenote's forecasting model calculates the chance of England reaching the last four at 40%.

The most likely semi-finalists are Spain, Netherlands, England and Germany according to Gracenote's simulations. The forecast suggests that we should expect two of those four not to make it though."

England would face one of Romania, Netherlands, Austria or Turkey should they reach the semi-finals.

In the round of last 16 Romania play the Netherlands and Austria face Turkey to set up a quarter-final.

The winner of that game would then face England.

So how have each team done so far?

    • Romania finished top of Group E and qualified for the last 16 for the first time since Euro 2000.
    • The Netherlands, who won the competition in 1988, qualified as one of the best third-placed sides after Austria topped Group D with France in second.
    • Ralf Rangnick’s Austria won two of their three games to finish top of the standings and be labelled the competitions' biggest dark horse.
    • While Turkey qualified in second from Group F with six points.

England are third favourites to reach the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 after being matched with Slovakia in the last 16.

The chance of England progressing from this match is 73% according to Gracenote's forecasting model which is based on our men's world ranking.

England's chance is only bettered by Spain (80% to knock Georgia out) and the Netherlands who are given 76% chance of progressing at Romania's expense.

Gracenote's world football ranking uses similar methodology as Fifa's women's world ranking. The most likely quarter-finalists are Spain, Netherlands, England, Germany, Portugal, Austria, Italy and France according to the Gracenote forecast. However, the forecast also suggests that there will be two or three surprise teams in the last eight.

Should England beat Slovakia in the last 16, they will then have to beat reigning champions Italy or Switzerland for a place in the semi-final.

But Italy have looked far from defending champions so far in this tournament.

They had to come from behind against Albania in their opener and were then deservedly beaten by Spain, before securing last 16 qualification with a last minute winner against Croatia.

The Three Lions have come up against Italy four times since the Euro 2020 final defeat at Wembley and have won two, drawn two and lost one.

Meanwhile, Switzerland finished second to Germany in Group A and have progressed to the last 16 for their third successive European campaign.

England are undefeated in their last 13 meetings with Switzerland, with the last victory in March 2022 in a friendly.

Before Tuesday's game against Slovenia, England manager Gareth Southgate spoke about there being a reset within the camp following performances that hadn't lived up to the expectations against Serbia and Denmark.

He also said he was "oblivious" to criticism from high-profile ex-England players, including pundits working on the BBC.

Yet by full-time, a section of England fans at the Cologne stadium expressed their own frustration at another below-par game, jeering Southgate and launching a handful of plastic cups in his direction.

Southgate then said in various post-match interviews that the reaction of media and fans was "creating an unusual environment" which is "causing an issue for the group".

The team around one England player told BBC Sport after the first two games there was a belief among some members of the squad that the fringe players who hadn't played could have made a difference to performances and the difficulties the team were having.

Both captain Harry Kane and Southgate admitted there was confusion around England's deficiencies.

So, what does this mean? Another impromptu party in the streets, of course!

The insipid performances may explain the virtual absence of any football fever on the streets. No bunting on houses or flags on cars... nothing.

  14. How do England stack up in attack?published at 14:56 27 June

    14:56 27 June

So, you've got an idea of how things have shaped up so far in defence for England - using Opta's data across a variety of different metrics - compared to the other 23 nations involved in the group stage of Euro 2024.

Now we turn to the attack and it's a mixed bag.

Again, let's get the ball rolling with what England have done well.

England are second in the rankings when it comes to 10+ pass sequences (68) - only Germany (72) have a better record.

They are third in total passes (1,862).

In the average possession category, England are fourth (58%) and they also sit fourth for build up attacks (16).

Interestingly, Germany are ranked number one in each of those four categories but have also delivered with goals and top the charts for most scored (8), whereas England are tied 16th in that metric, scoring just two.

England are tied for 21st in direct attacks (1) and are 20th for total shots (29).

My problem with the England games is there isn't enough goalmouth action. If fans thought they were going for it more, the results would be acceptable. Bar 20 minutes in the first game I don't think they have gone at teams with energy.

  16. How England have fared defensively?published at 14:48 27 June

For any number lovers out there, you've come to the right place!

Opta have been crunching the Euro 2024 group stage data and we have pulled out some of the key attacking and defensive metrics.

Let's begin with defence and start with a look at the positives for England.

Gareth Southgate's side rank top of all the 24 teams involved for expected goals against (1.15) - we all love a bit of xG data, right?

England are tied second across three categories - goals against (1), clean sheets (2) and direct attacks against (1) - Italy top that last one with zero.

At the other end of the scale, England are bottom of the rankings for tackles (24) with Georgia (63) topping that metric.

The Three Lions are ranked 19th when it comes to possession won (104) - Scotland (83) are 24th.

Before the tournament started, all the concern was about the defence being England's Achilles heel. No one is even talking about that now. It's all about how do we get the best out of the team in attack. I know which problem I'd rather have!

Wayne Rooney has questioned Gareth Southgate's decision to pick just one natural left-back in his squad for Euro 2024.

The England boss selected Luke Shaw, who is not yet fully fit, and thinks Chelsea's Ben Chilwell should have been included to give the side more balance.

Shaw has yet to feature in Germany with right-back Kieran Trippier filling in on the left.

Chilwell was left out of the squad after an injury-hit season that restricted him to 12 Premier League appearances.

"I was very surprised and really shocked that Ben Chilwell didn’t get picked just for balance of having a left footed player there," said Rooney on the Football Daily Podcast.

"You’re talking about Ben Chilwell who’s playing at Chelsea and he’s played well for England in the past.

"Do you play Tripper or [Joe] Gomez there? Do you bring Kyle Walker across?

"There’s so many imbalances about the team. Phil Foden, should he play on the left, or right, or as a 10? There’s so many questions about that."
