Yes, if you are a U.S. citizen or a resident alien living outside the United States, your worldwide income is subject to U.S. income tax, regardless of where you live. However, you may qualify for certain foreign earned income exclusions and/or foreign income tax credits.
Will I go to jail if I don't declare my offshore account? Yes. Any income earned in offshore accounts has to be declared by Canadian residents. Failure to do so is tax evasion and can lead to jail time.
The 90% rule applies to taxpayers who have not been a Canadian tax resident for an entire year, whether they are departing from or arriving at Canada. As a result, they may only be entitled to the full Basic Personal Amount deduction if 90% of their net worldwide income is Canadian-sourced.
Foreign employment income is income earned outside Canada from a foreign employer. Report your foreign employment income in Canadian dollars. In general, the foreign currency amount should be converted using the Bank of Canada exchange rate in effect on the day it arises.
Your tax obligations. As a non-resident of Canada, you pay tax on income you receive from sources in Canada. The type of tax you pay and the requirement to file an income tax return depend on the type of income you receive. Generally, Canadian income received by a non-resident is subject to Part XIII tax or Part I tax.
Who has to report? Form T1135, Foreign Income Verification Statement, must be filed by: Canadian resident individuals, corporations, and certain trusts that, at any time during the year, own specified foreign property costing more than $100,000.
In most cases, expatriation tax is assessed upon change of domicile or habitual residence; in the United States, which is one of only three countries (Eritrea and Myanmar are the others) to substantively tax its overseas citizens, the tax is applied upon relinquishment of American citizenship, on top of all taxes ...
If you are a U.S. citizen or a resident alien, your income is subject to U.S. income tax, including any foreign income, or any income that is earned outside of the U.S. It does not matter if you reside inside or outside of the U.S. when you earn this income.
What foreign income is not taxable in Canada?
You should report the most types of foreign income on your Canadian income tax return. Exceptions are some lottery winnings, most gifts and inheritances, child care payments, amounts received from life insurance policy, strike pay received from union, elementary and secondary school scholarship and bursaries.

Do I have to pay taxes in Canada if I live in the US?
Overview. If you are a Canadian citizen living in the United States, you do not need to file income taxes in Canada if the Canada Revenue Agency considers you a non-resident, and if you are not receiving any income from Canadian sources.
Canadian expats working or living in the US are taxed by both countries on their worldwide income, just like US expats in Canada.
Expats are required to report all types of income arising in Canada on their US tax return on the relevant part of Form 1040, such as earned income on the main form, interest and dividends on Schedule B, business profits on Schedule C (and foreign registered businesses may have other US reporting requirements too), and ...
However, you may qualify to exclude your foreign earnings from income up to an amount that is adjusted annually for inflation ($107,600 for 2020, $108,700 for 2021, $112,000 for 2022, and $120,000 for 2023). In addition, you can exclude or deduct certain foreign housing amounts.
To do this, you will need an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) or Social Security Number (SSN) issued by the United States government. If you do not have either of these, you will need to apply for an ITIN in order to file. You also must obtain the relevant US tax return forms.
