Does LLC business credit affect personal credit?
Business credit can influence your personal credit depending on several factors, including the amount of time you've been in business and any personal guarantees you have to provide for financing. These are just a couple of factors behind whether your business credit can affect your personal credit, however.
A business line of credit typically won't directly affect your personal credit score. Small business lines of credit, small business loans, small business credit cards and other debts your business is liable for, won't usually show up on your personal credit report.
Your personal credit history is curated by the three major credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian, and Transunion, and you have one profile with each. Experian and Equifax also have business credit reporting services. Your business profile is separate from your personal credit history.
Normally, your personal credit report shouldn't be impacted by a business loan, even if you've personally guaranteed the loan. Business debt and payment history do not affect your credit score, unless the business defaults on the loan, in which case your personal credit can be negatively impacted.
Your credit history—both personal and business—is only one factor lenders use to evaluate your application, not the be-all and end-all of the financing process. However, credit history is an important factor, and it can have a variety of effects on your ability to acquire the financing you need.
Since businesses don't have Social Security numbers, they're instead tracked by their name, address and employer identification number, also known as an EIN. Unlike personal credit scores, business credit scores are publicly available.
5 Further, LLC debt does not count as personal debt unless the business owner personally guaranteed the loan.
Remember, the only business credit cards that never show on your personal credit report come from Bank of America, Citi, U.S. Bank, and Wells Fargo. Of the four, only U.S. Bank has a respectable selection of business credit lines right now. Currently, Bank of America's cards offer fairly unimpressive rewards.
Personal and business credit score numbers are independent of each other but are often used together to determine your ability to secure a business loan. Let's break down the difference between these two important numbers.
- Establish a separate legal entity. ...
- Open bank accounts specifically for your business. ...
- Implement a dedicated accounting system. ...
- Establish business credit. ...
- Use Caution When Commingling.
How do I check my Ein credit score?
- Dun and Bradstreet: Often used by vendors and suppliers to evaluate trading terms with your business. ...
- Experian: Often used by lenders when considering your business for loans or lines of credit. ...
- Equifax: Often used by vendors, suppliers, and lenders.
Late payments on your business credit card can lower your personal credit score by as much as 100 points. Debt collections: Card issuers will transfer the unpaid business debt to a collection company.
Personal expenses: You can't use a business loan to finance any personal expenses. This includes personal property, homes, cars, or travel. You may not use a business loan to pay off your personal debt either, which includes delinquent personal taxes.
LLCs are started at the state level, and there is no credit check involved. All you need to do to form an LLC is submit the appropriate state formation documents (usually called Articles of Organization) and filing fees to your state's Secretary of State.
The minimum credit score required for the SBA 7(a) business loan is 650. The 7(a) loan is the most in demand SBA loan program to date. It guarantees small business owners up to $750,000 of working capital from their local 7(a) lender, with a partial guarantee from the Small Business Administration.
- Step 1 – Choose the Right Business Structure. ...
- Step 2 – Obtain a Federal Tax ID Number (EIN) ...
- Step 3 – Open a Business Bank Account. ...
- Step 4 – Establish Credit with Vendors/Suppliers Who Report. ...
- Step 5 – Monitor Your Business Credit Reports.
An EIN is not linked or associated with your SSN. As such, it provides additional personal privacy protection by using a different number than your SSN for reporting purposes. You can easily apply online for the EIN through the IRS. In addition to privacy, there are other advantages to obtain an EIN.
You can apply for a business loan with your EIN if you're a new business owner without established credit. However, you may also need to include your SSN and details about your personal finances because you'll likely have to provide a personal guarantee.
Even if the credit card is issued to your corporation or LLC, you will likely need to personally guarantee payment in the event that the company can't or doesn't pay. Some corporate credit cards don't require personal guarantees, and you, as the owner, would not be personally liable for that credit card debt.
If the corporation or LLC cannot pay its debts, creditors can normally only go after the assets owned by the company and not the personal assets of the owners. However, the business owner can also be held responsible for corporate or LLC debts in certain situations.
What happens if your LLC goes to collections?
As a general rule, if the LLC can't pay its debts, the LLC's creditors can go after the LLC's bank account and other assets. The owners' personal assets, such as cars, homes, and bank accounts, are safe. An LLC owner only risks the amount of money he or she has invested in the business.

Any income from a part or full-time job, a spouse's income or profits from the business can all be reported as personal income on the application. The credit card issuer will use this information to determine whether the application will be approved and to set the size of the credit line.
Most small business card issuers — though not all — base their decisions largely on the applicant's personal credit scores and income from all sources (not just the business).
While there are bad credit business cards, you typically need a personal FICO score of 690 or higher to be approved for a business credit card — though some business cards set an even higher bar.
