Does my US credit score transfer to Canada?
Does your US credit rating carry over to Canada when you move there? No. US and Canadian credit scores are not interchangeable. US credit scores are based on your Social Security Number as your identity.
Unfortunately, you cannot transfer your US credit history to Canada when you move. The way credit reporting is handled is one of the many minute differences between Canada and the US, so when you arrive in Canada, you must begin building your credit from scratch.
The question that arises is, Does US debt follow you to Canada? The short answer is no, your credit history usually doesn't automatically transfer when you move countries. However, if you have income or assets in the US, the collection process for your debt may commence there.
Global credit scores currently don't exist, so you can't transfer a U.S. credit score overseas. Other countries might use their own systems to determine creditworthiness. Giving international lenders a copy of your credit report, employment history and income verification could help you build creditworthiness.
"While your overall financial flexibility will be important, having a weak credit score won't necessarily stop you from moving to Canada." The overall length of your credit history helps creditors determine whether you can be trusted with a loan.
Your credit report and credit score don't follow you when you move to another country. But it is important to know that some debts you owe will remain active. Lenders may find it harder to pursue legal action against you when you are in a different country.
Establishing a U.S. credit rating isn't difficult; however, there are a few steps you'll need to take to start building it south of the border. These include: Secure a U.S. mailing address. Open three loan accounts, such as a bank-issued credit card, department store credit card or personal line of credit.
It can affect whether a landlord will rent to you, how you pay for insurance, how much you will pay to buy a car, and even whether you can land a job or not. That's right - employers, now more than ever, have started to check your credit to determine your level of responsibility.
When it comes to credit scoring systems, Canada is similar to the United States. Canada uses two of the major credit bureaus, Equifax and TransUnion, to determine someone's credit score. Like the U.S., Canada's credit score tracking is determined by factors including: Payment history.
Unfortunately, your Canadian credit history cannot follow you to the United States. While credit reporting companies like Experian have operations in multiple countries, the information they maintain in each individual nation cannot be transferred across national boundaries for several reasons.
What is a good credit score in Canada?
In Canada, according to Equifax, a good credit score is usually between 660 to 724. If your credit score is between 725 to 759 it's likely to be considered very good. A credit score of 760 and above is generally considered to be an excellent credit score. The credit score range is anywhere between 300 to 900.
You're still responsible for debt if you leave the country. If you stop making payments, it can ruin your credit score, and your creditors could also sue you to potentially garnish U.S. assets and wages.

While debt technically won't follow you abroad, you may suffer several consequences for trying to flee from it: you may be sued and have your wages garnished; your credit score will suffer; you may have to pay taxes on your debt. These are just a few consequences of leaving the country with unpaid debt.
Credit scores in Canada fall into five categories and range from 300 (poor) to 900 (excellent). Generally, in Canada, a credit score of 660 is considered good, and could help you get approved for a credit card. However, that may differ by credit card issuer and by the card you are applying for.
It can affect your eligibility for certain loans or credit cards as well as the interest rate you get. In Canada, your credit score ranges from 300 to 900, 900 being a perfect score. If you have a score between 780 and 900, that's excellent.
You can't get arrested for failing to pay a loan or a hospital bill or such (taxes and child support is an entirely different kind of beast). So if this is about a debt in the USA, you won't be held at the airport or anywhere else neither will you be deported.
The USCIS does not consider an applicant's credit score or financial history when determining eligibility for citizenship.
Firstly, it should be known that that non-payment of debts is not a criminal offence; therefore this alone will not prevent you from obtaining a visa or moving abroad. However, leaving the country is not a way of wiping the slate clean financially.
- Payment history 35%: Your record of paying bills on time, including credit card bills, loan payments, and rent payments.
- Credit utilization 30%: The amount of credit you're using versus the amount you have available based on your total credit limit.
If you've spent years working towards a near-perfect credit score, it doesn't matter, you'll have to start from scratch up here. If you have awful credit, the good news is that successfully immigrating to Canada will mean you leave it behind, but it doesn't absolve you of your debts.
Is it better to have a US credit card in Canada?
A U.S. currency credit card may save you money. Since your purchases and payments are made entirely in U.S. dollars, you don't have to worry about currency exchange fees.
Home loans
Borrowers with a 620 credit score should typically qualify for a conventional loan, but those with a 740 or higher will likely get a better interest rate. With a 715 score, you're well above that bottom line but still won't get the lowest rates.
While older models of credit scores used to go as high as 900, you can no longer achieve a 900 credit score. The highest score you can receive today is 850. Anything above 800 is considered an excellent credit score.
Traditionally, a poor credit score is between 300 and 560, with fair credit sitting in the 560 to 660 range. A good credit score in Canada is between 660 and 725, and very good is between 725 and 760.
The debt will likely fall off of your credit report after seven years. In some states, the statute of limitations could last longer, so make a note of the start date as soon as you can.
