Should I be worried about bank collapse?
What happens when your bank fails generally depends on whether the money is insured or not. There's a good chance your bank is insured by the FDIC, according to Jim Pendergast, senior vice president at altLINE by The Southern Bank. “In theory, your money is safe,” Pendergast says.
Yes, if your money is in a U.S. bank insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. and you have less than $250,000 there. If the bank fails, you'll get your money back. Nearly all banks are FDIC insured.
If your bank fails, up to $250,000 of deposited money (per person, per account ownership type) is protected by the FDIC. When banks fail, the most common outcome is that another bank takes over the assets and your accounts are simply transferred over. If not, the FDIC will pay you out.
A bank account is typically the safest place for your cash, since banks can be insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured institution, per ownership category. Banks that are insured by the FDIC often say “Member FDIC” on their websites.
So even if you worry about a run on the bank – like that scene in "It's A Wonderful Life" where panicked depositors try to pull out all of their money, or a modern version where it can be done electronically – remember that your funds are protected by FDIC or NCUA insurance.
Putting money in savings accounts, money market accounts, and CDs keeps your money safe in an FDIC-insured bank account (or NCUA-insured credit union account). Alternatively, invest in the stock market with a broker.

“The mortgage will be transferred to another bank if the first bank experiences problems and fails, and you will need to start making payments to the new lender. You might need to refinance your mortgage with the new bank, depending on the details of the transfer.”
In most bank failures, you don't have to do anything to get your money back. You can use your account as you did previously, but it will be at a new bank. If you have direct deposits routed to your account, the FDIC will reroute them to the acquiring bank.
By law, after insured depositors are paid, uninsured depositors are paid next, followed by general creditors and then stockholders.
What is the safest bank right now?
Among the safest US banks, according to Global Finance's November 2022 rankings, are AgriBank, US Bank, CoBank, AgFirst Bank, and Farm Credit Bank of Texas, primarily for those in the agricultural sector.
Your money is safe at Capital One
Capital One, N.A., is a member of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), an independent federal agency. The FDIC insures balances up to $250,000 held in various types of consumer and business deposit accounts.
Based on the analysis of Bank of America's financial health, risk profile, and regulatory compliance, we can conclude that the bank is relatively safe from any trouble or collapse.
You can keep money in a bank account during a recession and it will be safe through FDIC insurance. Up to $250,000 is secure in individual bank accounts and $500,000 is safe in joint bank accounts.
Ensure Your Bank Is Insured
If a bank or credit union collapses, each depositor is covered for up to $250,000. If your bank or credit union isn't FDIC- or NCUA-insured, however, you won't have that guarantee, so make sure your funds are at an institution covered by deposit insurance.
If the United States were to enter a recession, the funds you have saved at a bank aren't at risk of becoming lost or inaccessible the same way they were during the Great Depression. There are many more laws and pieces of legislation that protect your money than in the 1930s.
- First Republic Bank (FRC) . Above average liquidity risk and high capital risk.
- Huntington Bancshares (HBAN) . Above average capital risk.
- KeyCorp (KEY) . Above average capital risk.
- Comerica (CMA) . ...
- Truist Financial (TFC) . ...
- Cullen/Frost Bankers (CFR) . ...
- Zions Bancorporation (ZION) .
In most cases, accounts are sold to another bank, and you will automatically have access to your funds at the new institution. Funds should be available immediately. In the case of FDIC payments, the agency aims to pay out customers as soon as possible after their bank failure.
If you have a brokerage account with cash you need within the next 36 months, ask your financial adviser to invest in a Treasury-only money market or bond fund. You might also consider buying CDs from different banks up to FDIC limits within a brokerage account.
The collapses in March of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) and Signature Bank – two of the largest U.S. banks to fail since the Great Depression of the 1930s – have led some to wonder if the nation may be headed for a new widespread banking crisis.
What to do before the banks collapse?
- Maximize liquid savings. ...
- Make a budget. ...
- Cut back on unneeded expenses. ...
- Commit to closely managing your bills. ...
- Take inventory of your non-cash assets. ...
- Pay down your credit card debt.
- JPMorgan Chase.
- U.S. Bank.
- PNC Bank.
- Citibank.
- Wells Fargo.
- Capital One.
- M&T Bank Corporation.
- AgriBank.
Still, the FDIC itself doesn't have unlimited money. If enough banks flounder at once, it could deplete the fund that backstops deposits. However, experts say even in that event, bank patrons shouldn't worry about losing their FDIC-insured money.
Before Silicon Valley Bank collapsed in March, it had been 28 months since a U.S. bank went up in smoke — the longest stretch without a failure in more than 15 years.
Most banks are insured by the government's Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, or FDIC, Servon said. That insurance covers up to $250,000 per customer, and $500,000 for joint accounts.
