What is the average credit limit in Canada?
While credit card limits can be upwards of $500,000, that really isn't the norm for most Canadians. Surprisingly enough though, 41% of Canadians have a credit card with a limit of $10,000 or more. Only around 15% of Canadians have a card with a low credit limit of $2000 or less. The average limit overall is $13,000.
According to Experian™, one of the three main credit bureaus, the average total credit limit across multiple cards was about $30,000 in 2021. In 2022, the average credit limit for the baby boomer generation was about $40,000, while Gen X had about $36,000 in credit limit and millennials had an average of about $30,000.
Experian reports the average credit card limit was $28,929.80 in 2022. However, credit card limits vary widely based on factors such as credit score, age, and income.
On our list, the card with the highest reported limit is the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, which some say offers a $100,000 limit. We've also seen an advertised maximum credit limit of $100,000 on the First Tech Odyssey Rewards™ World Elite Mastercard®, a credit union rewards card.
The average credit card balance of a Canadian consumer is $3,909 as of Q1 2023. The best way to tackle credit card debt is with a balance transfer credit card.
As such, if you have one of these cards, you might consider a $5,000 credit limit to be bad and a limit of $10,000 or more to be good. Overall, any credit limit of five figures or more is broadly accepted as a high credit limit. The main exception to the usual credit limit rules are secured credit cards.
To get a $100K credit limit from a credit card, you'll need to have an excellent credit score, a lot of income and little debt. You will also need to pick a credit card that is known for offering high credit limits to well-qualified applicants.
According to a recent report by Experian, the 2022 average credit limit for Americans across all credit cards was $28,930. However, individual credit card limits can be as low as $200 depending on the consumer's age, employment status and credit history.
The credit limit you can get with a 750 credit score is likely in the $1,000-$15,000 range, but a higher limit is possible. The reason for the big range is that credit limits aren't solely determined by your credit score.
Credit card debt in America by the numbers
That represents a 4.6% increase in a single quarter, with cardholders shouldering thirteen-figure debt at $1.03 trillion for the first time. In short, that amounts to an average balance of $5,733 per cardholder.
What's the most prestigious credit card?
The Centurion® Card from American Express
And it's so exclusive that you can't even apply for it. American Express is tight-lipped about what it takes to become a Centurion cardholder, but it's believed you need to pay a $10,000 initiation fee to get into the club.

Whether or not you can purchase a vehicle with a credit card will depend on the dealer and the policies they have in place for certain transactions. Many dealers refuse credit card transactions or limit the dollar amount of such transactions due to the hefty transaction fees that often accompany them.
In Canada, according to Equifax, a good credit score is usually between 660 to 724. If your credit score is between 725 to 759 it's likely to be considered very good. A credit score of 760 and above is generally considered to be an excellent credit score. The credit score range is anywhere between 300 to 900.
Forty-three percent of Canadians currently have credit card debt, according to NerdWallet's 2023 Consumer Credit Card report. Among them, 40% think it will take them six months or longer to pay off all of that debt, and 11% are not at all sure how long it will take them to pay it off.
Another way to look at it is the 28/36 rule. This states that no more than 28% of your income before taxes should be going to home expenses (including mortgage payments) and no more than 36% should be going to all other debts. Once you identify how much money is going towards your debts, ask yourself if it's enough.
A good credit limit is above $30,000, as that is the average credit card limit, according to Experian. To get a credit limit this high, you typically need an excellent credit score, a high income and little to no existing debt. What qualifies as a good credit limit differs from person to person, though.
